MEDIA STATEMENT – Update from Canada Bread in Response to the Release of the ITO Related to the Industry-Wide Competition Bureau Inquiry
Today an Ontario court made public the Information to Obtain (ITO), which outlines certain allegations of past practices amongst packaged bread manufacturers and retailers. Specifically, informants at George Weston Ltd. and Loblaw Companies Ltd. have admitted to inappropriate conduct and have made allegations that certain former Canada Bread Executives were also involved in the conduct. They claim that this conduct dates back to 2001 while Canada Bread was under previous ownership.
Canada Bread learned of the claims in the ITO in December, 2017. The company was not permitted to discuss the ITO publicly until it was made public by the Ontario Superior Court today. The allegations do not reflect the Canada Bread we know. Our current leadership takes these allegations very seriously and are actively investigating to take the necessary measures.
We are cooperating fully with the Bureau as it conducts its inquiry and will not be making any further comment at this time. We will continue to do what we do best: bake delicious and nutritious bread for all Canadians.
